Kwik Trip plans approved for West Mason Street in Green Bay

GREEN BAY — Kwik Trip got the green light Tuesday to convert a now-vacant shopping center into the Green Bay area’s 23rd supermarket.

The Green Bay City Council approved an amended version of the La Crosse-based retailer’s conditional use permit application to build a 9,000-square-foot grocery store in the 1000 block of West Mason Street.

Kwik Trip plans to build the store on a 2.8-acre parcel along West Mason Street, between Ashland Avenue and South Oneida Street. The site is currently occupied by two shopping strip centers, a former subway and an office building, all of which are already vacant.

Green Bay approved the change in response to input from neighbors

Kwik Trip originally submitted a site plan for 1007-1009 W. Mason St. with three entrances, one each at West Mason Street, Gross Avenue and Gross Court.

Residents of the neighborhood south of the site raised concerns about the Gross Court entrance at an information meeting in February, and city staff recommended it be removed.

The staff report provided to council recommended Kwik Trip install a four-foot buffer along Gross Court instead. The buffer can be a wall, a fence, a berm, plants or a combination of these, provided that it is at least four feet high and blocks the view of the neighbors to the south.

A spokesperson for Kwik Trip said the recommended change was acceptable from its perspective.

Rainwater collection and more greenery included in Kwik Trip’s plan

There is currently not much of the site that does not have buildings or a paved parking lot.

Kwik Trip’s plans would add extensive landscaping and a stormwater retention pond to the eastern portion of the site. The city staff report indicates the detention pond should help alleviate some of the stormwater problems in the surrounding neighborhood.

When does the West Mason Street Kwik Trip open?

The company previously said it plans to add the store to its 2025 construction schedule.
