Attack by inmate seriously injured Nebraska prison worker, officials say

LINCOLN – An employee of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services was seriously injured after an attack by an inmate last week, according to a department news release.

The attack happened on May 1 when the staff member was taking an inmate to his cell. As the staff member removed the leg restraints, the inmate kicked the staff member in the head and chest, department spokesperson Dayne Urbanovsky said.

The corrections officer was diagnosed with a concussion on May 6 and continues to be monitored by medical providers.

An investigation into the incident is underway. Any findings will be passed on to the The Lancaster County Attorney’s Office in order to determine whether criminal prosecution is justified.
