Utah Football adds former five-star QB Sam Huard to transfer portal

Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes made a spectacular addition through the transfer portal on Tuesday with the signing of former Cal Poly quarterback Sam Huard.

Huard, a former five-star signal caller from Washington, spent the first two seasons of his career with the Huskies before transferring to Cal Poly as a sophomore.

Last season with the Mustangs, Huard put up some impressive numbers. The Washington native finished his sophomore season going 185-304 for 2,205 yards and an 18-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. During the previous two seasons with Washington, Huard saw action in a limited number of games, completing just 24 passes total.

Coming out of Kennedy Catholic High School in the class of 2021, Huard was listed as a five-star prospect and the nation’s 12th-ranked player by the 247Sports index. He also entered as the third-ranked quarterback in his class, the third-ranked player in Washington and the 425th-ranked player in 247Sports history.

While Utah’s established quarterback returns for the 2024 season in senior Cam Rising, with a Rising working his way back onto the field after a brutal knee injury and likely leaving Utah before the 2025 NFL Draft, the Utes have added a truly impressive player to the QB room.

The Utes will play for the first time as members of the Big 12 Conference on Thursday, August 29, against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
