Elkhorn Mount Michael wins shootout against South Sioux City

Class B No. 9 Elkhorn Mount Michael won a shootout to beat second-ranked South Sioux City 2-1 Thursday evening in the opening round of the boys state soccer tournament.

It puts the Knights into Saturday’s 2 p.m. semifinal, the second time in four seasons that Mount Michael advanced at state.

They won the shootout 4-2.

A pair of defenders provided the only scoring through regulation.

Nicholas Halpin gave Mount Michael a lead in the 28th minute, heading in a free kick from Peter Hass from the left side for the senior’s third goal of the year.

The Knights would hold onto that lead for the next 40 minutes before South Sioux found its equalizer.

A Roman Garcia back post header off a corner kick from David Ochoa leveled things with 12 minutes to play. It was the fourth of the year for Garcia, a senior.
